Ans. There are seven main types of boats constructed in the Maldives
                            i. Bokkuraa
                          ii. Vadhu dhoani
                         iii. Fathiya dhoani
                         iv. Mas dhoani
                          v. Sathari dhani
                         vi. Safari dhoani
                        vii. Baththeli dhoani
                       viii. Boatu
2. State the uses of each of the following.
Ans.
1. Bokkuraa :-
i. It is used for ferrying goods and people between larger vessels and shore.
ii. It is used by fishermen for transporting fish and their belongings between anchored boats and the shore.
iii. These boats are also used for line fishing (at the edge of the reef house) and for pole and line for scad.
2. vadhu dhoani:- it is mainly used for trolling in the in-shore waters and hand-line
fishing
3. fathiya:- it is used for ferrying goods and people between larger vessels and shore.
4. Mas dhoani:- It is mainly used for fishing
5. Traditional sailing dhoani: – It is mainly used for pole and line fishing for tuna
6. Mechanised mas dhoani:- It is mainly used for pole and line fishing for tuna
7. Mark II mas dhani:- it is mainly used for traditional pole and line fishing for tuna.
8. sathari:- mainly used for transporting good and people to different atolls

3. Describe the use of stern flat, bait well, main hold of the mechanized mas dhoani or mark II dhoani.
Ans.
1) Stern flat:- it is used as the fishing platform
2) Bait well:- The mid-interior of the boat contains the bait well.
It is used for storing live bait
3) Main hold:- the two main holds next to the engine are used for storing the main catch tuna. Or it is used for storing the main catch tuna.
4. What is the approximate length and width of a normal mas dhoani?
Ans. The length of the normal mas dhoani varies 10 to 15m. The width of the dhoani is approximately 3m.

5. Write short notes on mark II mas dhoani.
Ans.
1) The mark II dhoani is sued for traditional pole and line fishing for tuna
2) Many of the Mark II mas dhoani are as large as 45 feet in length.
3) The second generation mas dhoani which also has a 6 inches broad bulwark to increase safety.
4) Its handling requires extra skills.
5) The strength of the dhoani is adequate for the stress put on it by sailing & fishing.
6) The vibration cause additional stress to the structure of the boat.
6. Explain the advantages of mechanization in mas dhoani.
Ans.
1) Mechanisation enabled the fishermen to travel further distance and spend ore time on the seas in search of fish.
2) A mechanized dhoani can catch at lest 30 tons of fish per year.
3) Mechanized vessels are also better suited to supply fresh fish to the mobile collector vessels
4) Mechanization also caused a huge expansion in economic investment for engineers, repair and fuel storage facilities.
